The Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy established St. Joseph’s middle school in the year 1987. It was a private institution in the beginning and in 1990 it was recognized as a Middle School. There are 650 students studying in this school. 18 Second Grade teachers and an equipped graduate Headmistress are working in this school. In Kanyakumari District St. Joseph’s Middle School was honored with “Merit of Specialty” in the academic year 1999-2000 for proving their academic excellence. In the system of “Free Lunch” 632 students are benefited. As a model school in the District of Kanyakumari, the school headmistress has taken steps to get temporary recognition. Apart from their teaching the teachers of this school, visit the nearby area people and instruct them about sanitation and the importance of giving education to their children. A nursery school is also functioning in the school premises from the year 1999.
To make teaching effective, we have been adapting the new methodology of teaching ABL (Activity Based Learning) for the primary level and ALM (Active Learning Methodology) for the middle school level. We strive to impart education in order to make students intellectually competent, spiritually oriented, emotionally integrated and socially committed.
In it 50 children are being taught the basic manners. The teachers train the children by play method. In the National Service Scheme, there are twenty students at ready mode to help the needy. Five teachers train the NSS students. To practice the purpose of saving, the school headmistress has introduced “Small Savings Scheme” for the students and the scheme has rightly reached the students. The students have deposited an amount of Rs.20,000/- in the post office through this small savings system. “Rain Water Harvesting” Scheme also implemented in this school, and an awareness programmed to the people of Poothurai of Rain Water Harvest was also executed successfully by the school children in their school premises. There is a separate building for inmates too. There is a television for recreation and two computers for computer studies.
