Poothurai is both the soil of blessings and the Divine House. It bears the credit of being decorated even at the age of kings. It, then consisted of just two streets named Siruvathu Arason Vizhagam, Pandaha Salai katti theru.
People belonging to the caste of Hindu Nulaiyer(Araiyar) were living in this particular locality. It is true that this caste has deserved its own place in Tamil literature. It is also said in the literature of Sangam that the profession of these people is more fishing. It is specialized that these people of Nulaiyer are the real origins of the king Nazha Raja.
Long times back, there lived a great man named Appi Vaithiar (Kunju Perumal) in this place. This man and his followers were very strong in establishing justice around this place. They lived in Poothurai Valia Veedu. These people had medicated the sick at free of cost. So it is no wrong to call the place of such great residents as a “the earth of Good Seeds”
These people established some temples and offered prayers to Gods such as Thamburan, Pathrakazhi, Edappuram Esakki Amman and Melar Kottu Isaki Amman.
It was after 1980 that they established “Hindu Araiyar Munetra Sangam” under the guidance of Mr. P.Kumaraswamy, B.A, BL Advocate, who has carved the rules for the conduct of this society and till date it has functioning Very successfully. Only after this, they established Arulmigu Iyappa Swamy Thiru Kovil here.
